About State of Food Insecurity
September is “Hunger Action Month” and leaders from the Washington Department of Agriculture and the state’s largest food banks will hold a virtual press briefing Thursday, Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. to provide an update on the food assistance needs of Washington residents. The briefing will discuss the state’s efforts to address the demand and how the food banks are responding, and will include a 15-minute Q&A.
Speakers are Washington Department of Agriculture Director Derek Sandison; Washington Department of Agriculture Food Assistance Specialist Katie Rains; Food Lifeline CEO Linda Nageotte; Second Harvest CEO Jason Clark; and Philanthropy Northwest CEO Kiran Ahuja.
Governor Jay Inslee and Philanthropy Northwest teamed up April 7 to launch the WA Food Fund, a statewide relief effort that directs donations to three organizations — Food Lifeline, Northwest Harvest and Second Harvest — which supply food banks and pantries across the state. The fund has raised more than $10 million since its creation, but officials estimate millions more will be needed in the coming months to meet demand.
Food banks and pantries are struggling to meet crushing demand as record numbers of Washingtonians are out of work. For the week ending Aug. 29, more than 357,000 people filed for unemployment, and first-time claims are up 270 percent from the same time a year ago, according to the Washington Employment Security Department.
